It is said that the memories we have of our own grandparents will shape how we grandparent our own grandchildren. Do you believe this to be true?
What are some of the memories you have of your grandparents? |

My father's mother was a large woman (especially to a young me) with steel grey hair and piercing blue eyes that saw everything. Every Christmas the entire family had to show up at that tiny house they lived in and you had to be quiet. If we little gals got a new wallet or purse, grandma passed it around the adults to put something in and it had not better be coins either. She also cooked lots of rhubarb which I still cannot eat to this very day. I also loved the beautiful rose gardens that my grandfather had. We used to joke and say it covered up the smell from the outhouse (yes, outhouse, as my grandparents did not have "indoor bathroom facilities"). Oh how I hated to have to go out there in the dead of winter or the heat of the summer... and the whole family had to visit on Sundays or suffer grandma's icy stare and Polish mouth... My cousin Janet and I love to remember those times... oh how we laugh but we remember. One thing we can't remember though is her every hugging or kissing us.
My mother's mom lived across the street from us and we saw them every day. I still remember how all her housework would be done by 1PM every day and then she would clean up into her "afternoon" dress and go and sit on her front porch and talk with the ladies of the neighborhood as they passed by on their way shopping or visiting. I still can't understand how with all our major appliances, we have so much stuff left undone today. LOL.... she even ironed my grandfather's socks when they came off the line... I never knew that my grandfather was a major janitor in a huge bank until after he retired. Every morning he left for NYC dressed in a suit, tie, etc and carried a briefcase (which I later learned was his lunch). I only learned the truth after seeing his picture on his retirement in the company magazine. Sometimes my younger sister and I would have breakfast over there before we went to school. I especially felt for my younger sister as she took the brunt of things when PaPa died and NaNa was alone. Nancy went and stayed across the street every night and NaNa laid out her clothes for school the next day. Mom finally had to change the lock on our front door as we found out NaNa would come in while we were gone and get clothes for Nancy... NaNa was picky. My Aunt tells me the greatest stories about her and Mom's childhood with my grandmother. I just can't imagine my sweet NaNa doing some of the things she tells me today. Thanks for renewing some old and very dear memories for me. I could go on and on but won't. Hard time right now. |

This is the one time of year that I miss my grandmother the most. This being my dad's mom, who was my safe place as a child.
Up until I was 8 years old we lived on the same property as my grandparents, and I spent many hours of my day with my grandmother, who looking back was my hero, and now is my role model. I miss this grand lady very much, but feel her closeness with me everyday. Little things that happen remind me of her, to the point that it feels like she is pointing them out to me. I hope she knew/knows just how much she was loved, and what an influence she has had on my life. Nough said for now. |

This is kinda hard for me to talk about.
I LOVED my grandmother(Nana). I felt she was my safe harbour in all things. Although she never said so I knew that I was her favourite and had a special bond with her. We used to come up to her house almost every year for Christmas to stay. Some years we couldn't afford the plane trip so had to stay home :-( I used to sit on her knee and she would stroke my thumb with her finger. I still love that feeling today. Christmas at her house was always special and lovely. When I was 12 we moved up to Wanganui and lived for a year with Nana. I shared her bedroom with her. Many a night I wondered if she was still alive when her breathing would be so quiet. Nana had bad asthma and usually you were more than aware that she was alive! I've often sneaked out of bed to go check on her only to have a sudden snort scare me through the roof! We moved out into our own home not long after I turned 13. One day I came home to find out that she was in hospital. Nana had had a stroke and was found lying in the door when mum went to check on her that day. I hated visiting her in hospital. She couldn't talk anymore and she looked so miserable. I didn't know what to do or say. One day Nana was well enough to come home so she moved in with us. Mum asked me if I would stay with Nana so she could go and do a job. I said No as I wanted to go and play with friends. When I came home there was an ambulance outside our house. Nana had fallen as Mum had tried to get her into the car. She had broken her hip. Nana never came home from the hospital again. I've always blamed myself for her death. I miss her dreadfully. When I gave my heart to the Lord a year later I cried that I couldn't share my wonderful news with Nana. She wasn't a Christian woman but I knew she would understand my joy and peace. Life in our extended family has never been the same without her. She was like the glue that held everything together. OK. I need to go and pull myself together now and wipe away the tears. I was close with my gram Minnie, she was so sweet. She was the kind of gram that you had to give a hug to when you came in and when you left. She loved hugs!
She was Native American-Nez Perz (sp?) and had long long beautiful gray hair. My grandpa was from Sweden and I dont recall a lot of him since he passed when I
was in the 3rd grade, but I do remember when he'd get mad at gram, he'd curse in Swedish LOL Still to this day, I have no clue what he said!
Now that I am a gram, I want Nolan to know who we are and plan on being in his life as much as possible! It was beautiful to give birth to our 4 children, but when you see your first grandchild born, oh wow!! It leaves you speechless, your heart grows fuller with love, and your eyes flow joyful tears you never knew exsisted! When I hold him, I dont even have to say I love you to him, cuz my heart already says it with every beat. I want him to always know that even when he doesnt hear Nana say I love you, all he has to do is hold his heart, cuz that's where I will always be. Im looking forward to creating memories for and with him. When Papa and I had him the other night so Jake and Christa could get some rest, we were laying in bed snuggling with NoNo, and Zane said, wouldnt it of been nice if our parents would of done this for us? Oh yeah if only!! Well we are going to make up for all that our kids didnt have with their grands, and make sure Nolan does. Being a Nana, is priceless!! Andra

I even seem to be more patient with lifes happenings since Nolans been born. Must be the powers of a grand babe?? Andra
